In an effort to redress the lack of representavity on Wikipedia, we are organising an Equality Edit-A-Thon. This event is open to all students, academic, and administrative staff.
The event will take place on Monday March 4th 16:00-17:30 in Boole 2.
In order to facilitate the event, we would like to encourage as many participants as possible to register for a Wikipedia account in advance of the event.
Extensive research has shown that women and people of colour are significantly underrepresented both in the ranks of the volunteers who curate Wikipedia and in the articles they produce. This edit-a-thon offers students and staff the opportunity to contribute to efforts to redress this imbalance by editing, creating and/or translating articles about women, people of colour and minorities groups for publication on Wikipedia. It will begin with a short masterclass on writing/translating for and publishing with Wikipedia. Then, participants will be helped to submit their own article to the encyclopedia. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop where possible. Let’s get editing for equality!
